I work in a school building constructed decades ago under code that is not acceptable for new construction today. The size is too small to accommodate the number of people in each classroom, and many rooms have no windows and poor ventilation. Now there is a deadly respiratory virus that will recirculate all day in that room should it gain a foothold. Without enforceable regulations about mask use and physical distancing, the school has no recourse should anyone decide to flaunt the idea that personal protection helps the common good. Updating workplace safety standards to parallel the CDC guidelines is a common sense action that will save students and staff from harm.
