As a father of 4 students attending public schools in Virginia, I am writing to express my support for the proposed changes Standards of Accrediation. It is high time that Virginia move beyond a single test given on one day in May to determine if a student has the appropraite skills. This places so much pressure on the students. All I hear about all year long is SOL test this and SOL test that. PLEASE move to a more balanced approach that includes multiple measures as well as student growth. Take a running example. Would you expect everyone to run a 9 minute mile? Would you say to them, on May 18th I expect all of you to run a 9 minute mile and if you don't your a failure and may not get a diploma? I hope not, then why do it to students? What if someone goes from a 13 minute mile to 9:30 mile? Sounds great to me. Thanks for reading, and please make changes so our children are not exacerbated by these silly SOL tests.
