Mandatory Supervision for Vet Students and Interns/Residentsa
To the Virginia Regulatory Town Hall:
As we all know, there is national movement to change our attitude about the earth and animals that live among us. Millions of people no longer tolerate animal abuse; we've adopted a no-kill policy in shelters; laws now regulate wildlife and domestic animal protection.
Pets are now regarded as family members.
With all these positive changes, why would any pet parent knowingly allow unsupervised students/residents to treat or operate on our beloved pets? We've been working to better their lives; we wouldn't put them at risk.
I believe that it's an owner's right to protect their welfare and medical care. We should require prior notification, written permission, and veterinarian supervision if a student vet is treating or operating on our pets.
