My daughter is a nursing student and I recognize the importance of clinical training as much as possible. However I would limit practice on live animals (privately owned or owned by the school) to third and fourth year students as long as they are closely supervised by a Dr. of veterinary medicine. Clients should be told that students will be performing certain procedures and have the opportunity to decline. Third year students should be given a smaller scope and progress as their preceptors feel they are prepared to perform more difficult and potentially life threatening procedures.
