As long as schools some sort of control - for example, an approved list of list of texts- teachers should be able to choose from those approved texts without having to endure another mountain of paperwork. Additionally, a Local division should have control of what it deems "appropriate." Students are already allowed to select alternate books if their parents find the class content offensive, so this seems redundant. It is, after all, part of OUR job as parents to pay attention to what our students will read. This content comes in the syllabus to start the year. Even if parents are told about "objectionable" content, these are relative terms- how do I know what you consider objectionable? Or how I can be sure that I don't miss something in there that a student is offended by? This seems like a slippery slope.
