All good literature provokes thought and discourse by its nature.  The purpose of studying these pieces is to encourage thought, analysis, and discovery.  When our students are surrounded by violence and suggestive materials in all areas of their lives daily, eliminating literature that may contain these types of materials also eliminates discussion and education on these very topics.  This leaves students only tabloids and the Internet to shape their thoughts and views on incredibly relevant, delicate topics that will shape who they become for the rest of their lives. As educators, I believe that we are capable of directing conversation and analysis that is beneficial to our students as learners and as humans.
