As the parent of a student in the Talented and Gifted Program at Nelson Elementary in Newport News, the proposed changes could potentially affect him, as we will be relocating to Richmond in the near future. I do think that uniformity of guidelines is inherently positive, as it sets a statewide standard from which deviation cannot occur. I would hate to think that my son potentially would not qualify for continued gifted education in Richmond, based on that locality arbitrarily determining for itself specific guidelines for qualification or inclusion in such a curriculum. I would also encourage lobbying for increased funding for gifted programs, as it seems that historically, education dollars have always been significantly skewed towards remedial education.
