Gifted education is working well the way it is. There is no need to change something that is working. The main problem I see with the proposal is the removal of external review and the reduction of the planning period from 5 years to 1 year. It is foolish to not have a "big picture" plan that encompasses more than one year at a time. Nothing can be accomplished when you re-adjust priorities on a yearly basis. The external review serves as the "checks and balances" that need to be in place to make sure gifted education is equal throughout the state, and your child receives the same education another child receives, regardless of where he/she lives. The proposal removes those checks and balances that holds localities accountable. If changes are to be made, I support the revised proposal as laid out by the Virginia Association for the Gifted.
