A requirement that children must sit while drinking is not practical or appropriate in all settings, such as during field trips or while children are outside on the playground. In these environments, seating may not be available, and delaying hydration until children can sit may increase the risk of dehydration, especially during active play or warm weather. Staff should be permitted to use professional judgement to ensure children can drink safely in a variety of environments while maintaining appropriate supervision and supporting individual needs.
