It seems to always go like this. Whenever political momentum begins to accumulate around the possibility of adjusting certain cultural norms and laws to be more inclusive towards a previously marginalized segment of the population, certain folks will start to say that the Constitutional principles aiming to protect the freedom and well-being of all US citizens shouldn’t actually protect all US citizens. These folks are often motivated by uninformed fears that those marginalized citizens pose some potential, unrealized threat to their own freedom and well-being, even when those marginalized citizens are the ones experiencing immediate, measurable, and sometimes lethal exclusion from the legal and societal structures which are meant to protect them. Then, of course, the forces which historically pose the greatest ACTUAL threat to the lives and freedoms of US citizens (and humanity at-large) - the sociopathic ultra-wealthy and their corrupt politicians - well they go straight to work exploiting those fears and divisions in order to both distract from their own criminal greed and to sew the seeds of chaos and conflict from which they can always profit. But ultimately, see, what inevitably happens is that a plurality of people wind up recognizing, once again, that cultures built around empathy, inclusivity, and basic human rights are the ones that experience the greatest achievements and widespread prosperity, and they adjust their laws and social norms accordingly. And the people that were adamantly opposed to those fundamental notions of increased tolerance and multicultural equity end up in the history books as the misguided bigots that they are.

That’s what I believe we’re seeing here. Efforts to exclude trans athletes from organized sports are simply another part of the wider and tragically ongoing history of discrimination and oppression of the global lgbtq community. Politicians that pursue legislation aimed at marginalizing trans athletes are very rarely genuinely concerned about fairness in sports and are instead fomenting the cultural divisions that benefit their political careers and the corporate interests that control their purse-strings.

So here’s what’s up:

  1. Trans women are women
  2. Trans athletes meeting the requirements of their competitive organizations do not currently pose any significant threat to the quality or fairness of organized sports. The International Olympics have allowed trans participation for over 19 years now, causing no substantial disruption. This following is a link to a Change-My-View thread on Reddit and the comments provide a good discussion around the nuances of these issues. https://www.reddit.com/r/changemyview/comments/u7r2bw/cmv_it_is_unfair_for_trans_women_to_compete_in/
  3. All sports require moderation and ongoing discussion of rules and regulations to maintain fairness within those leagues etc. I think those orgs, and not state health boards, should be the ones working out these ongoing issues.
