No to TED

When it comes to their necessity in Virginia crab pots, there is little to no scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness or necessity. Currently, no studies have been conducted to directly link the use of TEDs in crab pots to the overall turtle population or to any significant conservation impact.

Crab pots are static gear that pose a much lower risk. Additionally, there is no substantial data showing that Virginia’s crab pots significantly threaten turtle populations. The absence of any peer-reviewed studies or statistical data on this subject raises questions about whether TEDs in Virginia crab pots are a necessary regulation or simply an unfounded precaution.

Without concrete research, implementing TEDs in crab pots could be an unnecessary burden on the crabbing industry rather than a proven conservation measure. More studies would be required to determine if there is any legitimate risk to turtle populations before requiring additional modifications to crab pots in Virginia waters.
