The term “art therapy” is often loosely thrown around as a way to engage in art with some sort of emotional focus. I have run into individuals who claim to do art therapy, but are not certified or licensed, they simply do art. There is a stark difference between an artist and a mental health professional. This is the danger that comes without an art therapy license. I support an Art Therapy license in Virginia to protect the title of Art Therapy, but also protect the individuals who wish to receive such services.
