Safety issues in addition to environmental concerns

Many have commented on the environmental issues with the menhaden nets, which I have seen myself, with non-target fish and marine life trapped in the nets. But in addition, these nets pose a navigational hazard to marine traffic. There are no lighting or other marking requirements. Some nets appear on charts, but avoidance is often a matter of local knowledge, especially at night or in poor visibility. Water sports enthusiasts are also at risk, often the wind and current can push someone in the water or on a small craft such as a SUP into the netting. Poorly maintained nets disintegrate and leave dangerous debris in the water. I have seen the support poles broken off and floating barely visible above the surface. A motor or sailing craft hitting this debris could be severely damaged and pose threat to those on board. There needs to be tighter regulation of location, size, maintenance, and marking. These nets should also be required to be a minimum distance from public boat launches. There should also be a requirement to safely dismantle nets no longer in use.
