Under the proposed Model Policies Concerning Instructional Materials with Sexually Explicit Content from the Virginia Department of Education, parents would be notified of books or instructional materials with "sexually explicit" content. Let me be clear that this is completely unnecessary overreach. No one is preventing parental involvement and this seeks to answer a problem that doesn’t exist. If a parent doesn’t want their child to read content they object to, then they should monitor their child’s behavior-that’s their responsibility. I object to actions like this veiled attempt to align homosexuality with deviance and perpetuate stigma against an already vulnerable group that experiences violence as a result. Future, all children should be able to read stories about their own existence in an age appropriate capacity. Since this is subjective, it remains the parents job to monitor-not the State, and not the school system.
