Virginia does not need this. It is imperative that teachers are allowed to instruct using a variety of materials representing a wide array of people who inhabit this Commonwealth. Teachers must be allowed to help students understand and navigate others' perspectives which is necessary for them to become engaged citizens. Teachers are not trying to indoctrinate or influence any students in the classroom. But denying students the ability to learn in safe spaces will do nothing but impare them as they become adults. The students I teach, as well as my own children, deserve to know that there are all types of people in the world and that those differences make us stronger as a Commonwealth.
