As a public school teacher, I cannot show even excerpts from an R-rated movie, but I am supposed to broadcast and discuss such sexual content as "Abortion out loud". Under the guise of "mental health," SEL lessons are rolled out weekly during Advisory class. I am meant to mediate and facilitate discussions on sexual identity, sexual preferences, and gender identity. At no point did my background and training to become a licensed English and ESOL teacher in the state of Virginia prepare or qualify me to fill this role. Stop treating students like victims who need Big School to watch out for them and make decisions for them. These students have families, some of whom are more involved than others. Stop assuming that all students come from broken, food-insecure homes where their voices are not heard.
