Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

SEL will result in lawsuits against VDOE as it infringes on LGBTQ, Religious, and individual rights

SEL aims to identify/ label students. They will then teach the student what group they are in, what being in that group means, how to feel, what feelings are right and wrong, what they should be feeling, how they should be feeling about other groups, and what is equitable, fair, and just. Groups based on gender identification, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, race, and socio-economic status must be identified to adhere to the SEL curriculum. Right and wrong aspects will be taught about these groups to the students. Teaching these aspects must be inclusive and be presented to special education students. The school is not equipped to do this. This is not the school's role. Who is deciding what is right or wrong? This is taking over the family values. This is not a right of the school, infringes on individual and family rights, and will result in lawsuits against the schools and VDOE.
