As a doctor of physical therapy and mother of two girls, I am highly concerned about the continuation of gender misrepresentation in the realm of athletics as well as any other realm for gain of status, development of purpose, competitive edge, or other reasons. The idea of not feeling at home in one's body is not new or uncommon. One might feel like they identify more with cultural values or standards or aesthetics of an opposing gender. We have lived with the normalcy of this reality and a perceived mismatch of sexual identity for many decades. However, when gender identification creates a level of severe discomfort at a societal level and a critical lack of safety for any other members of society (especially those most vulnerable women and children), we must act! It is fair and right to prevent the mislabeling and misrepresentation based on gender incongruency from becoming misconduct. Protect our girls now!
