Virginia Needs to Lead by Keeping RGGI

Virginia needs the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).

  • According to a recent report from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science the sea level is rising more in Norfolk than anywhere on the East Coast.   https://www.vims.edu/research/products/slrc/localities/nova/index.php
  •
  • The United States Dept. of Defense has raised climate change as a national security priority.  The Naval Yard is a crucial part of that security, as well as the economic health of the Norfolk community
  •
  • As a result from climate change, Virginia is already dealing with destructive storms (as recently as 8/7/2023), flooding  in southwest VA, and the projected rising sea levels along the coast. Global warming is affecting every corner of the Commonwealth.
  •
  • It is too expensive to NOT keep RGGI.  It will be much more expensive to deal with the consequences of ignoring global warming caused by CO2.
  •
  • Research completed by the PewResearch Center reveal that a majority of U.S. citizens want the U.S. to become carbon neutral by 2050.   https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/04/18/for-earth-day-key-facts-about-americans-views-of-climate-change-and-renewable-energy/

Virginia needs to be a leader and move toward solving these problems by keeping RGGI.
