Unnecessary Healthcare Regulations Will Burden Virginia Women

Last fall, Virginia women staged a speak-out and a rally in Richmond to express their discontent with the proposed TRAP laws, after which no one could have believed that this commonwealth's public favored these regulations. What was the response of the governing bodies? Temporary regulations were passed, much to the chagrin of Virginia women. Fortunately, these temporary regulations will expire, at which point it is up to the Board of Health to correct this atrocity. Not only do these restrictions take away access to affordable pregnancy and family planning, but they also limit cancer and STI screenings: I challenge anyone to justify obstructing women's health so blatantly in this manner. Furthermore, the regulations in question are based on political agendas, not scientific and medical studies. The medical benefits for patients are dubious at best (and inhumane at worst): classifying a women's healthcare facility as a hospital does not provide any actual changes to the very safe procedure of abortion. Rather, this means that the building facilities will have to be changed to meet the new regulations - at a cost so great that many of these clinics will be forced to shut down. The regulations will severly inhibit women's access to affordable and high-quality healthcare, leading to an increasingly unhealthy Virginia. As a concerned citizen of this state, I demand that sound decisions be made regarding my access to healthcare and that the proposed permanent regulations, identical to the temporary restrictions, be opposed by all members of the Board of Health.
