I write to express my concern that banning books that have transgender characters (or other books that may be potentially banned on the subject of race, gender, or sexuality) will have a negative impact on students who would be forced to grow up in a world with monolithic thought and ideology. When a child is able to witness other points of view they are able to expand their world view and grow their emotional intelligence, allowing them to succeed in an ever-globalizing world.
These books do not contain sexual or pornographic content. If a parent is concerned that content in a book about a boy who wonders how to accept their baby brother or sister into the world is sexual in nature, I would suggest that parent seek counseling. Books are not radicalizing children into a lifestyle their parent doesn't recognize, it is the parents ignorance that pushes their children away from their family and into a new family that would accept people for who they truly are.
