I am a 1997 graduate with an M.S. in Counseling and Psychology from what was then Troy State University (now Troy University). After many years of moving and serving the homefront side of military life as a spouse, I am settled in Virginia and will finally have the constancy of place to pursue LPC. In 1997, my program was not CACREP accredited. If the state turns to a CACREP only requirement, good candidates for LPC like myself will be unduly penalized. I favor high standards, but it seems reasonable that there be a way to allow candidates who graduate from valid programs that were/are not CACREP accredited to be able to work to an equivalency, instead of being faced with having to retake an entire Masters program. I do not believe that 7 years is enough time in all cases for grandfathering to work.
