He She Ze and We adamantly opposes Action 4905, which would ban trans girls and women from participating on "female" teams and using "female" designated spaces.
Being a part of a sports team is an important part of the development of young people that are interested in athletics. Being on a team helps youth develop a sense of responsibility, self-discipline, the ability to receive and internalize criticism, and feel a part of something that is bigger than themselves. Being a part of a team feels special.
Many trans youth gravitate towards activities that are more inclusive and not gendered, such as music and art. Some trans youth love playing sports. No matter what our kids choose to do, they deserve the same access to these activities as their peers.
If a trans kid wants to learn a sport, they deserve to be able to play on the teams that align with their gender. Trans students belong on sports teams. Trans girls are girls and should play with other girls in soccer, basketball, tennis, dance, cheerleading, softball, gymnastics, etc. Trans girls deserve to use the facilities that support these programs.
It's fun to play sports. It is also a known fact that physical exercise and athletics improve the overall mental and physical health for the youth that play. All parents want their kids to be happy and healthy and feel a sense of belonging in their communities, in schools, and in activities that interest them. Sports should be a a choice for all youth, including trans girls!
