I am the founder of Chester Career College in Chester, VA. We have trained Surgical Technologists for approximately 15 years. During this time, we have maintained an outstanding job placement rate for our graduates, many of whom are hired directly from the facilities where they perform clinical training. We have always used the NCCT certification examination for our graduates. I am requesting that this law be amended to allow NCCT testing to be included as an approved examination for certification for Surgical Technicians.
The law as currently written allows only 1 of the 2 equally accredited and legitimate certifications which creates a negative impact on students, graduates, and employers. In order to meet the employment demands for Surgical Technologists in the state of Virginia, access to both certification examinations will produce a wider pool of qualified individuals. It will also honor the hard work and commitment of Surgical Technologists who have taken the NCCT and have worked in-field for many years. Additionally, it will also recognize the hard work and dedication of students currently enrolled in this program.
By giving one accrediting board a total monopoly on testing creates a problem. Students, graduates, as well as employers should have the opportunity to make decisions regarding certification. The process of certification must not be given exclusively to one board. I am requesting that you please reconsider this law and amend it to include NCCT testing as an option.
Thank you.
