No scaling or expanded duties for assistants

I am writing in regard to the proposition by the Board of Dentistry allowing dental assistants to perform the work of dental hygienists. For the record I am opposed to any legislation allowing any and all scaling duties for the newly created Dental Assistant II. I am well aware of the extensive education required to perform the duties of a dental hygienist. To think that a dentist would entrust the health, well being and safety of a patient to an individual that lacks the skills and education needed to examine and detect many health issues truly scares me. Frankly, I am apalled at this proposed action.

I know from personal experience that dental hygienists are trained to detect oral cancer as well as dispence counseling on nutritional and dietary concerns. Our family dentist employed a hygienist that detected oral cancer in a family member that our dentist had unfortunately missed during his examination. The early detection by our hygienist saved the life of my family member.

Should this bill pass, the untrained receptionist, assistant or anyone working at the dental practice would have permission to clean my teeth. That does not make me feel very confident in the decision making process of our dentists or the board that is directed to oversee this industry in Virginia. In my opinion, this proposition is motivated strictly by money. The dentists supporting this bill would rather sacrifice the health and safety of a patient and pay a lower wage to a less skilled person in order to increase the net profit of their dental practice. What other reason could there be to propose such a dangerous legislation?

Should this legislation pass, that would be a great travesty and an even greater example of cronyism.

Collin R. Kelly
