re: petition for registration of dentists who administer sedation

As an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon practicing in the Commonwealth of Virginia I am already required to register as a dentist and as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.  Oral surgeons are well trained in the delivery of anesthesia including IV sedation and General Anesthesia. As such, Oral Surgeons should not be included in any new registration requirement. Non Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons should be regulated to ensure that they have met the necessary requirements to administer sedation whether it be by oral or parenteral methods. These requirements should meet or exceed those of the American Dental Association. Members of AAOMS and VSOMS undergo an Office Anesthesia Evaluation at least every 5 years. Non oral surgeons who administer sedation or general anesthesia should be registered with the state just as oral surgeon are already required to do. When considering the above petition, please denote that oral surgeons are dentists that through their training are qualified to administer anesthesia and are already registered with the state both as a dentist and as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.  Thank you for your time.
