As a Virginia parent I’m disgusted and appalled that Virginia still allows any from of seclusion and restraint. Scientific studies show seclusion and forceful restraint, even in prison, worsens behavior long term and causes mental and physical harm. My mother was a special needs educator with a degree in child psychology and masters in education. She never used these horrific means to subdue a child. The state should stop allowing this practice and get with the modern age. Breaking children’s hands and locking them unattended in a dark room IS UNACCEPTABLE! My partners family and mine are mostly teachers, ranging from K-6, West va and Virginia. The West Virginia teachers were appalled to hear this primitive punishment method is legal in Virginia.
