As former Chair of our Foundations of Education Department at VCU, and current Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the School of Education, I wanted to indicate my strong support for continuation of required social foundations for teacher licensure. Social foundations is the one course that effectively integrates multiple perspectives related to the history and cultural underpinnings of schooling, as well as providing students with essential coverage of ethics. Our School of Education faculty as a whole supports inclusion of these competencies, and believe that removal from the regulations will lead to less informed, less critically reflective teachers who will not have appropriate and needed professional knowledge.
