Please be aware that several dentists are in support of DA II scaling based on the Indian Health Services. Dentist should realize that the IHS has a shortage of dentists therefore at some point a "NEW" role will be created to fill the need of the underserviced population, reducing the need for dentists.
I work in an area where there are several patients straight out of the military. More times than not I have to inform them that they have periodontal disease. The purpose of the military is to fix teeth and to minimally maintain teeth to ensure our fine soliders are ready for duty/ combat at any time. So you can not compare civilian dentistry to military dentistry. So do not use the model of IHS or the military to support DA II scaling. You have to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. Patient expectations and military expectations are two separate attitudes. Has anyone every said their experience with military dental treatment was the best treatment ever? The treatment in the military meets the needs of our armed services but the same can not be expectations can not be placed in the general population. So please do not use this a justification to pass DA II scaling. Dental assistants should have more functions to help the dentist do quality dentistry but not to detriment of our patients.
