NO, dental assistants should not be allowed to scale
 

Dental assistants should not be all allowed to scale supragingival or subgingival calculus.  There is a great deal of learning and training that is necessary before they could safely and properly scale a patient's teeth.  If they wish to perform this procedure they should become hygienists.
