As a former certified dental assistant, and now a practicing registered dental hygienist, I oppose the idea of having dental assistants scale teeth.  There is a lot more to scaling teeth than just removing the plaque and calculus present on the tooth.  Registered dental hygienists have gone to dental hygiene school and worked hard to understand this to give our patients the best and effective oral care possible
