As a dental hygiene student I strongly oppose this action!!  Dental hygienists are licensed to perform scaling duties for a reason, they spend hours in the classroom and in the clinic setting to gain the skill and knowledge it takes to safely and effectively perform these very duties.  Dental assistants are simply not qualified to scale teeth!!  We need to keep the safety of our patients in mind when making such rash decisions.
