I think that if assistants want to scale teeth they should go to school to become a hygienist. I don't think it is fair that we go through the rigorous training that it takes to become a hygienist and then can be slighted by allowing assistants to scale. I took a vow to practice a standard of care that is specific for hygienists and I feel like this will give our profession a bad name. We need to think about periodontal disease and how this will be affected by this decision.
