To whom it may concern at the Virginia Board of Dentistry,

  It saddens me I have to write this email.  As educated health care professionals yourself I am amazed you are even considering allowing Dental Assistants of any level of training to perform any scaling duties.  As a dental hygienist, I do so much more than just removing biofilm and calculus deposits.  I am continuously educating my patients on preventing health problems that go beyond the oral cavity and have a link to numerous overall health problems. Often, when I begin an appointment, all appears well: the tissue Looks healthy, there doesn't Appear to be much calculus, it Seems I have a relatively simple prophy on my hands Until I Start the Periodontal Evaluation and find pockets, bleeding and A Bacterial Infection.  Because my education is based on Total Health and not just the oral cavity, I understand how to educate my patients, treat their Disease that will lead to toothloss and numerous other health issues, help them reach a healthy level and understand their role at home. Together, the patient and I work hard to maintain that level of health.  The role of a Registered Dental Hygienist goes well beyond just scaling teeth, and I strongly oppose allowing dental assistants to perform any and all scaling duties.
