I do not agree with allowing dental assistants to scale teeth on periodontal type I patients. Dental hygienists are put through rigorous training in subgingival scaling, dental assistants would not recieve the adequate training to effectively remove calculus in a short timeframe. Some periodontal type I patients have a significant amount of calculus, therefore dental assistants would be expected to perfrom subgingival scaling. Without the proper knowledge of tooth anatomy and periodontal disease, the dental assistants may not remove all calculus or provide sufficient oral hygiene knowledge. Please maintain the respect in the profession of dental hygiene by denying this proposal.
