DA I and II

I support the delegation of expanded duties to properly trained  DA II, to those dental assistants that have successfully challenged the DANB certification exam, or a state board/dental college approved examination to confirm knowledge and skill.  I believe that it will increase the access to care for the public.  Dentists could prepare the teeth, and the assistants could complete restorations under direct supervision (the dentist must be present in the office at all times).   Because of potential damage to the periodontal ligament, I am opposed to the delegation of subgingival curretage.  If the DA I will be allowed to work without any education or testing, her duties should be limited to preparation, and disinfection and sterilization after infection control training/education.

As you undertake shaping the parameters, certification, current CPR, hands on training, and state board approved testing must be required.  Continuing education to maintain excellence should be required, and it should be a license as opposed to a certificate, to allow the State Board discipliary action, and to protect the public.  The license would also assist the access to care issue, because assistants are less likely to change jobs, when they have invested in a career.
