As a second year dental hygiene student at Virginia Western Community College, I strongly disagree with the introduction of a DA II. Dental Hygienists are trained specifically in the area of preventative oral health care. This is done with proper client education, scaling, and root planing. In my experience while practicing dental hygiene I have yet to find a client who exhibits only supra-gingival calculus. Therefore, when these DA II's scale only above the gingiva, the calculus left below is wreacking havoc on the periodontium. Yes, a DAII would save the dentists time and money, but at the clients expense. Our clients deserve complete and thorough treatment. I feel that this cannot be accomplished by a DA II. Higher education in dental hygiene is key to disease prevention.
