I'm concerned.

I see a predominance of comments from those in the dentistry profession. Indeed, I have been better educated on this proposed revision from having been exposed to their perspectives. My perspective, however, is from one who sits in the dentist’s chair. It is my oral cavity that is being poked, prodded and otherwise subjected to all manner of manipulation by the dentist and the dentist’s staff. For me, as a patient, I will also be directly impacted by this proposed revision. Anyone who has had the misfortune of being hospitalized recently understands the direction that the medical profession has pursued in relation to the delegation of patient care. Need a nurse? Sorry. Perhaps a minimally skilled certified subordinate will do. Some may think I am off-point here. I don’t think so. The proposed revision regarding Dental Assistants is a perfect example of the dental profession advancing the model of patient care now establish in the medical profession. I understand the points of view that explain the practical reasons for supporting this revision. They appear well-founded. However, let’s also consider the slippery slope that this creates for all subsequent revisions. I am concerned about the future of the Dental Hygienist profession. Patients, like me, consider the Dental Hygienist an extension of the dentist. Many develop a closer relationship with the Dental Hygienist than the dentist. This relationship is built trust, largely due to the foundation of the training, education and experience that the Dental Hygienist profession is built upon. The Dental Hygienists in my dentist’s office are long-term employees, having worked with the same patients for many years. On the other hand, the Dental Assistants come and go. Please, let’s keep dental patient care at a high professional standard.
