This proposal is incredibly surprising to me. Being a proud VCU grad who was continuously reminded of the importance of patient care and that the only standard that should ever exist in dentistry be the "GOLD" standard, this is very disappointing, (especially after noticing that the person that was overseeing that education is "for" this proposal.) Our patients deserve the best care possible given by the best-qualified professionals.
Will these assistants also have pharmacology and medical emergencies training incorporated into their certification so that they may learn the significance of an INR? How about implant care? Will they be able to explain to the patient how there diabetes can affect their periodontal condition? Smoking? How about oral pathology? These are topics only an appropriately trained dentist or dental hygienist can perform.
I don't quite understand how this will save a dentist any time if the scaling can only be preformed under direct supervision. Having time to give a hygiene exam is hard enough.
So many patients are fearful to go to the dentist only dedicated, compassionate, and well-trained professionals is what they deserve to see!!!!
