Practical Training in Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary students enrolled and in good standing in an accredited DVM program should be allowed to perform "hands on" training under the supervision of a Board certified Veterinarian.  The modest amount of hands on practical training received in class would be enhanced greatly if the limits currently in place would be removed to allow veterinary students of all grade levels to participate in hands on verterinary work under appropriate supervision.  There is no substitute for practical experience in real life situations. Providing veterinary students greater opportunities to participate in "hands on" veterinary work will benefit not only the student but the Veterinary profession as well by having the DVM programs graduate more experienced individuals capable of hitting the ground running immediately after graduation. This certainly would be good for their future patients as well.
