I agree that 1st -3rd year students need more hands on training

Owners seek knowledgeable professionals to take care of their pets.  We as Veterinarians establish a bond between the client and pet and ourselves that is priceless.  How are future Veterinarians expected to learn this in a classroom?  This petition is seeking to allow future Veterinarians that are already enrolled in a Veterinary college, to be mentored by the people in the profession they will be working with later in life.  Yes, students can learn in the halls of the college, and have for years, but they will not learn how to communicate with a person who is losing their only tie to their lost spouse, or how to handle a fearful agrressive dog or cat, unless they wittness it.  They cannot learn all the little nuances of the profession in 1 year of clinicals.  The more supervised exposure these students have, the more knowledgeable they will be, and the more proud we can be of this profession. I am not saying these students should be turned lose with clients as if they have full knowledge of Veterinary medicine.  The Veterinarian/mentor should always be in a supervisory role at all times, and be sure the clients know this.  Also, the Veterinarian should be conscious of the experience level of these students and match this to their training.    I want the future Veterinarians to graduate with more confidence in their skills, and be better Veterinarians overall. If we can help this, then we should.
