Response to Evident Confusion

I have read several responses from people outside of the veterinary community, who are expressing their concerns.  It is important to remember that each and every single veterinary student chose to put in the hard work towards earning a position as a student of veterinary medicine for several years.  Every single student has chosen this path in life in order to help animals.  All we want is to learn how to make their lives more comfortable, happy, and keep them healthy.  We think so highly and fondly of our furry patients and pets that there is nothing more important to us than becoming the best veterinarians that we possibly can be, so that we may have the priviledge of taking care of other peoples' "babies."  That being said, this bill is simply a way to facilitate this desire.  This bill is simply opening the avenue for students to learn UNDER SUPERVISION from doctors outside of the university.  Some owners may not be aware of the fact that not every procedure is or can be taught in veterinary school.  The schools unfortunately do not have the resources, time in the curriculum, or sufficient number of faculty to teach students every procedure, technique, or practice that may be necessary in the clinic.  So in reality, the concerns that stem from the idea of students "practicing" on pets should be alleviated, because this student, who has been deemed worthy of working towards earning a veterinarian degree, will be even MORE qualified than he/she would have been as a young veterinarian entering the industry without this bill in place.  Again, this is not unsupervised practice, this is a way to offer supervised EXTRA opportunities to gain more experience, confidence, and knowledge before we go out into the world as veterinarians, so that we may better serve your babies, and you, once in practice.
