I have taken two of my pets to Va. Tech for specialized treatment over the past few years.  If that was a 4th year student assisting, I find it hard to imagine what a lesser experienced person would do.  Although there was no specifics 'mistakes', I found that the student's expertise and ability to communicate was not mature enough to handle clients.  Let students learn the basics in their years at school and then only treat animals with a vet present.
