More hands-on experience, yes, but at what cost?

As an education professional, I agree that having hands-on experience is vital. However, any such experience MUST be supervised (and by that I mean in the same room, actually being watched) and it MUST be up to the owner whether or not to allow a vet student to participate in the care of their pets.

I've been a patient in more than one teaching hospital, and I was ALWAYS given a choice whether or not to allow a medical student to participate in my care (and yes, it was very obvious from the way they treated me that they were still learning). Any medical student ALWAYS identified him/herself as such and I ALWAYS saw the experienced doctor for the diagnosis and discussion/treatment.

As a concerned pet owner, if my pets needed specialty care, I would want to take them to a teaching hospital, where I would expect that I would get the same treatment as I would, if it were a human hospital. So, give me the choice on who participates in my pets care, and make sure that all supervisors interact not only with the students, but also with the pet owners.

So, my questions is, where are the details that explain how this will be implemented and where are the safeguards that ensure our pets don't suffer at the hands of inexperienced students?
