From a patients perspective, I want a licensed person to treat me in any clinical setting. You can not replace the years of clinical training a hygienist recieves with a few weeks or months of training for a dental assistant. Having had my teeth cleaned by many hygienists and a few dentists, I would hands down prefer a hygienist to clean my teeth. I would not go to a practice where I am not recieving the highest standard of care.
