A Loophole Approach

The quality of care will suffer immensely! I have worked in offices were assistants were allowed to perform many tasks for which they were not properly trained. Already too many dentists allow this substandard of care for their patients. I have also worked as a civilian dental hygienist for the US Navy. They too propose this training. The training is mediocre which in the end the patient suffers. So called "prophy techs" often did damage to the tissue as well as the enamel of the teeth. I vividly remember one incident in which the "prophy tech" mistook cervical decalcification for calculus and used a sonic scaler to remove it. The end result the patient suffered needless sensitivity and the need to undergo a great deal of restorative work all because their "cleaning" was performed by one not properly trained. If there is supracalculus there will be subcalculus merely removing the supra does not benefit the patient's health. Too many think the mouth is a separate entitiy from the body as a whole and do not take the patient's overall health into the decision of treatment.  If dentists truly cared about their patients and their practice they would under no circumstances allow this decision. Far too many want to herd their patients through the hygiene portion of  their dental care to restore teeth with crowns which will profit the dentists wallet.  Dental hygiene is a tremendous field. Please do not allow the quality, integrity, education and standard of this profession to be damaged.
