Scaling should NOT be included in the DA II training.  Some dentists are encouraging this as to lower payroll expenses and increase their profits.  Some dentists are also saying that adding scaling to the curriculum for DA II training is appropriate as long as dental assistants fulfill the proper requirements.  The proper requirements include a two-four year degree in Dental Hygiene, along with passing national and regional boards.  

Dental assists are NOT trained with proper supra and sub-gingival scaling techniques, dental anatomy (which is important to avoiding tissue trauma and infections),  and  periodontal therapies.  All are important in treating patients for prophylaxis, periodontal maintenance, and initial deep scaling.  

As for a shortage in hygienists, that is untrue.  It is difficult now as a new dental hygiene graduate to obtain employment in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia.  Just look for yourself.  This is evidence that there has NOT been a spike in dental hygiene salaries as one DDS has previously stated.  On the contrary, it has decreased.  

Overall, there will be a decrease in the standard of care for all patients putting them at risk for dental and periodontal disease.
