I do not believe dental assistants should be allowed to perform scaling techniques. Dental hygiene students go through at least a two-year degree program to be able to perform the invasive scaling techniques required to successfully clean a patient's mouth. A dental assistant cannot just acquire these techniques from observing and possibly a short course of instruction. I feel allowing dental assistants to scale could cause harm to the patients they would be treating.
