Strongly Oppose This Petition - Raises Serious Ethical and Public Safety Concerns

I am writing with serious concerns about this petition as it raises ethical and public safety concerns. It is important to note that the Board of Counseling in Virginia has determined that it cannot ethically sanction those trained in the discipline of professional psychology to practice as Professional Counselors, just as the Board of Psychology cannot ethically sanction those trained in the discipline of Professional Counseling to practice as professional psychologists. Counseling and psychology are distinct professions in terms of preparation, training and practice.

In Virginia alone there are 12 CACREP accredited Counseling master’s programs where future counselors may seek and receive appropriate training for licensure as a counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia. So there is no lack of opportunity to address the needs of students or of the public. As much as we feel for those who attended a psychology program with the expectation of becoming a licensed counselor, the Board of Counseling is responsible for protecting the public and ensuring client welfare.  Part of that responsibility is being sure that professional counselors are prepared as counselors.

I anticipate full and careful consideration of this very important issue. Preparation and licensure as a counselor is hardly a one size fits all process!
