My son, James Quick, has been living at an Oxford House located on Pine Hill Road in McLean, VA. He has been a resident for over three years and his time there has been amazing for him and his recovery. Once there, he immediately got a job as a server in a restaurant and he has been continuously employed since moving there. (Being employed is an Oxford House requirement.) The Oxford House "formula" has been so successful for Jamie. With each house being its own "democracy," he has thrived. He has been President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and all the committee chairs in his years living there. The house Tuesday night meetings are a "must" and Jamie makes a point of always attending these important gatherings. All the men gather together to discuss daily problems and just to re-enforce the "rules of the house." Jamie was recently asked to sit on a District Committee with Oxford House and was even asked to join an International Convention of Oxford House. Over 3,000 people traveled to Denver, Colorado, where he learned so much from a variety of speakers and workshops.
Jamie has learned so much from this system of living at an Oxford House. He knows how to run meetings, he can keep notes from a meeting, he learned as treasurer how to collect the rent money and keep the books balanced. But most of all he has learned how to live peacefully and fairly with a group of men. He has learned to listen and not judge people, he has learned to live and work together with all kinds of people, and most importantly of all, he has remained clean and sober for over three years. I know this is hard work every day for Jamie and I firmly believe the Oxford House formula is what helps him be the person he is today.
